Hello everybody ! I'm a newbie so don't laugh too hard will you. Just purchased my K120 (1TB) yesterday. Using Nero9 recoder... I've made a start in transferring my DVD collection to the K120. Which is one of it's main goals I do believe !. Anyway after several hours of processing I got a file with extenstion .MP4 which starts up fine in Windows Media Player from a separate external HDD.... But just will NOT start from the K120 !!! a little hand appears and that's it. K120 does support .MP4 does it not ? What could i be doing wrong... or I'm a using a wrong program to convert DVD's to a smaller size. Does anybody have a good suggestion with regards to what is the best software to use ? NB) a .avi file DOES start up from the K120. I may have a lot more questions later... hope you don't mind. Thanks for any tips ! cheers

Hi there JayKay,

According to page 3 of the user manual the K120 supports MPEG-4 so basically it should work.
I noticed some different behaviour when files are played from an external hard drive and when the same files are played from the internal hard drive (for instance I can't get subtitles to appear when playing from an external drive but I can when I copy the dossier - that is .avi and .srt file - to the internal hard drive. You might give it a try unless you already try to play the MP4 file from the internal hard disk.

As far as your second question is concerned.... At home I dual boot between Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.04. Under windows I'm ripping my stock of copy protected DVD's with DVDFab HD Decrypter and I'm converting them to Xvid Avi's with AutoGK.

On Ubuntu I'm using K9copy with libdvdcss2 to rip my copy protected DVD's and Handbrake to convert them to avi files. K9 copy even gives you the possibility to Rip and Convert to XVID all at once but I prefer to use Handbrake for the encoding....a matter of personal taste.

Good Luck

Thanks for your reply Kracheck. It's really appreciated.

At the moment I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium. But thinking of upgrading to Windows 7 soon.
Converting my DVD's (as I said using Nero 9... Nero digi) first to an external HDD. When I playback this .MP4 file via my computer from this external disc using Windows Media Player 11 it works just fine!
So I presume the ripping procedure is ok (allthough it takes forever).

I then copied this file from external HDD to my K120 (no problems encounterd). But when I try to play from K120 via my brand new HD TV (HDMI connection)..... nothing ... just that little hand I mentioned below. Just don't understand why.

I suppose I could rip to Divx / Xvid (.avi) instead of .MP4, as I know this WILL work, but that's not really the point is it. Either K120 supports .MP4 or it doesn't .... or I'm doing something wrong.

NB) Is this the correct thread for this kind of problem ?
Should there not be a separate Forum for K120 users ?

Thanks again for all help received?
Cheers
